Ecuador Seeks to Attract Foreign Investment and Tackle Content Theft

On June 7th, at the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, TAP Chairman Gustavo Pupo-Mayo met with Ecuador’s Minister of Production, Foreign Trade and Investment, Julio Jose Prado, regarding the growing audiovisual content theft problem facing his country as well as other Latin American nations. Content piracy in Ecuador and other countries in the region has resulted in a substantial loss of Pay-TV cable/satellite subscribers, revenues, and subsequent tax income.

Strengthening IP protection is an important piece of the puzzle for attracting foreign investment, and the Ecuadorian government is committed to bolstering its regulatory framework to give the necessary protection and legal certainty to the creative economy.

TAP Chairman also expressed support for Ecuador President Guillermo Lasso's initiative to champion the local audiovisual sector by offering incentives to international media companies who invest in Ecuadorian productions.
